The concept of "Biological building" or "Bio-building", which has been developed in very detailed lectures by Doctor Pierre PLAT, is today related to the "Earth" material, in symbiosis with Environment. It was the title of one of his speeches which was both enriching and innovating (on several accounts especially the vibratory field). This speech took place in the frame of events organized in 2000 by various specialized Associations and public Organisms at the time of the campaign : "One Century of Trades : the EARTH" at Salernes, a town in the South of France, famous for its work on clay as early as the 5th century before J.C. |
This concept implies a global approach of any building : from the choice of the site of implantation to that of the materials which will be used. It includes the architectural conception in its whole, the outer shape of the building, but also the arrangement, the exploitation of all the covered volumes, the inner fitting out... The presentation of Dr Pierre PLAT's experimental project "PENTA G 2000" enabled him to give a concrete proof of his main preoccupation : taking the best advantage of a bioclimatic Architecture in symbiosis with Nature, potentialized by a specific morphology, in a site suitable to this purpose, well positioned and protected from winds especially. The aims of this project are, on one hand, to improve well known aspects of acoustic, thermo-hygrometric and visual comfort and, on the other hand, to discard static electricity, to escape from the influence of electric, electromagnetic fields, from vibrations whatever they are. For this doctor in medicine and university biologist, life in fact, is a self maintained respiratory and vibratory phenomenon from conception to death. Our housing plays a protecting part from this double point of view : it should therefore enable our body not only to breathe a healthy air devoid of the pollutants produced by the building itself or/and the neigbourhood ; it should also enable our vital energy to vibrate the longest possible without pollution or wave interferences which may disturb or even eventually harm it. The "EARTH" material perfectly fits the biological exigencies of such type of building under the condition it is associated to natural insulation or covering products which will not debase the intrinsic qualities of baked clay. That is the answer to the two aspects to be considered in order to conceive a bio-housing worthy of this name that is to say 1) not to harm : 2) to protect and create a pleasant environment of life. The figured technical characteristics of the earth, compared to other materials, have been studied regarding its thermic resistance and insulation, its inertia and voluminal mass, its coefficient of diffusivity, its hygroscopic regulation power, its permeability to steam... That is why the report of this lecture (published at the end of April 2001) can be considered as a document of scientific references on the subject. The conclusion is based on the virtues of empiricism which have been appreciated for thousands of years with the building in earth which comes back into fashion (either raw earth : pisé, compressed bricks..., or baked clay in the new concept of "monomur" in multi-alveolar bricks which are rather thick, to give some examples). In these future prospects, the "Tradition" must combine with the "Modernity" of contemporary domestic technologies (Domotics [home automation] above all under the condition that it should be carefully set up and insulated to be biological as well).
